A1GP Νότιος Αφρική

A1 Team Canada secured its first ever Sprint race victory in this morning’s action-packed race held around the streets of Durban in glorious sunshine, while Switzerland regained the title lead as France failed to score any points and New Zealand picked up one point for setting the fastest lap.

Eighteen-year-old rookie Robert Wickens, the youngest ever pole-sitter in A1GP, got a good start and despite being hit from behind by New Zealand’s Jonny Reid at turn one and losing his five second lead due to a safety car period towards the end of the thrilling 15-lap race, Wickens managed to keep Great Britain and Switzerland behind him to take Canada’s maiden Sprint race victory and the first win of his A1GP career.

GBR’s Oliver Jarvis, who was wheel-to-wheel with Jonny Reid in Black Beauty as the pack tussled for position going into turn one, managed to gain two places and hold second position, despite sustaining damage to the distinctive red, white and blue car. Reid was forced to pit for repairs and was finally classified 21st.

Canada and GBR were joined on the podium by Switzerland’s Neel Jani in third position. The 24-year-old Swiss star started the race fifth and made up two places to score crucial championship points for his nation and regain the title lead from New Zealand.

Title leader A1 Team Switzerland dominated the action in Durban this afternoon to win the incident-packed Feature race, as the tricky turn one claimed numerous victims throughout the 48-lap race. Today’s results move the Swiss team 10 points ahead of France in the championship standings while New Zealand now lies third, having scored a meagre two points after enduring a frustrating weekend in South Africa.

Superb work by the French team in the pits helped Loic Duval on his way to securing second place behind Switzerland, an incredible feat considering the Frenchman only arrived at the track from Japan on Saturday morning and qualified eighth. Portuguese rookie Filipe Albuquerque wowed the crowds by racing to third position from ninth on the grid, taking an impressive first podium on his A1GP debut.

With just nine laps remaining, Canada’s Robert Wickens, who was on great form and running in second for much of the race, spun out at turn one and was hit by GBR’s Oliver Jarvis as he rounded the tight hairpin and could not avoid the Canadian car. The incident brought out the safety car and no sooner had the race restarted than it was all over due to am ambitious move from local hero Adrian Zaugg.

The South African driver, who started 15th, had climbed to seventh when he made a determined dive down the inside at turn one and hit the unlucky Jeroen Bleekemolen in the Dutch car, causing a major pile up involving five cars. Bleekemolen was out of the race, which continued for a short period under the safety car, but still classified in fourth position when the race was brought to a premature end by a red flag.

It was the third time during the Feature race that a multi-car incident at turn one led to a safety car period when the field squeezed through the tight hairpin eager to take advantage of one of the few overtaking spots on the narrow street circuit.

Malaysia’s Fairuz Fauzy had a superb afternoon, making his way through the field to finish fifth, having started from 12th on the grid. China’s Congfu Cheng was also on impressive form, racing from 11th to sixth and collecting a bonus point for setting the fastest lap.

Khalil Beschir was heartbroken as the Lebanese driver was on course to score his nation’s first ever championship point when the race was red-flagged with just one lap remaining.

Feature race winner and championship leader Switzerland’s Neel Jani, who has been suffering with a stomach bug and dehydration, was grateful for the safety car periods:

‘I had a lot of stomach pain and cramps and obviously many runs to the toilet, so this morning I felt really bad. I got two litres of fluids by drip and that was a little bit better afterwards but still the cramps and everything was still going on, so the race was really tough and in the end I really had problems to concentrate. I really felt how dehydrated I was and the concentration was really getting tough in the end so I was happy with all the safety cars. My mechanics did a superb job. They got the car ready and the pit stops were good, so I have to thank the team that they gave me again the car and I just had to drive it.’

France’s Loic Duval, who will not be able to compete in the remaining three rounds of the A1GP season due to prior commitments, was very happy with second in the Feature race today and thought it was one of the best races of his A1GP career:

‘The team did a great job. We overtook everybody. I mean on the track we were faster than them and fortunately for us Canada spun - I was pretty lucky actually because I almost crashed into him. It was just a great race, maybe the best of A1GP for me. It’s like a victory for us so now I feel really happy. I want to thank all my team because it’s the last race for me. I want to wish them the best for the rest of the season.’

Portuguese newcomer Filipe Albuquerque was pleased to finish on the podium at his first A1GP event:

‘I was pushing all the time and it was easy to make mistakes because the tyres were getting worse. I did some mistakes also, but it happens to everyone and it’s not easy to push for over 40 laps without making a mistake. I’m happy with a third place, I built up to fifth so I was already very happy because I came up from ninth after the first corner and the speed was good. Not enough like Switzerland or France but enough to be P3.’

Fiesta Sporting Trophy UK

fiesta220208.jpg

The third year of the Fiesta SportingTrophy (FST) UK kicks off on 1 March 2008 with
the Malcolm Wilson Rally based in Cockermouth, Cumbria, at the headquarters of M&
Sport in the heart of the English Lakes District.

Registered competitors will tackle 45 stage miles in the classic forests of Hobcarton,
Comb, Wythop, Greystoke and Grisedale. With several competitors returning as well as
many new registrations it looks as though it will be another exciting and closely fought
series.

The championship is once again supported by Chesterfield based Global Brands
Limited through the ‘Vodka Kick’ brand. 2008 also sees the introduction of two new
important sponsors. The Malcolm Wilson Rally will be the first test for the new technical
partner, Pirelli, who will supply the ‘control’ tyre for the series. Pirelli are strong
supporters of motorsport in the UK and this will be the first event of a long)term
agreement that sees a number of benefits to FST competitors. The second change is
the incorporation of environmentally friendly bioethanol E85 as the control fuel for the
series. The fuel, supplied by series supporter Greenergy, improves the car’s
performance as well as offering a reduction in CO2.

2007 saw a close battle for the overall series win with Jonathan Greer from Northern
Ireland eventually taking the title. With the drivers returning to the series for a second or
even a third year, as well as new drivers coming to the series for the first time, there are
so many talented drivers in the championship that the winner for the first round is
almost impossible to predict.

Among the series contenders is returnee Alastair Fisher from Enniskillen, Northern
Ireland. Fisher (19) finished second in the 2007 series and he will use the same car he
rallied with such success in the 2007 FST series in Ireland. Fisher’s pace in the UK
series last year improved all season and he will be looking to go one step better in
2008.

Elfyn Evans (19) from Machynlleth, MidWales, returns for a second year in the
championship. With new team GEMsport overseen by his father, former Ford factory
driver Gwyndaf Evans, Elfyn is expected to perform well in search of his first FST UK
victory. Elfyn also has a new teammate in the form of Meilyr Evans, the two)car team
is expected to be a real championship contender.

Northern Irish driver Liam Regan (20) from Belfast, returns to mount an attack on the
series with a brand new car. Regan finished a solid fifth overall in 2007 and is expected
to improve on this in 2008. Codriving for Regan will be the experienced Neil Dashfield
who is a former co)driver to championship sponsor Steve Perez (VK).

James Everard (22) from Hull is another driver returning to the series. Everard has been
working hard over the closed season with tuition from top rally drivers hoping that this
will give him the speed he needs to take his first overall win in the series and improve on
his sixth place from 2007. He also has a new codriver in the form of Sam Collis.

Two returning competitors making the trip across the water from Ireland are Barry
Greer (20) from Carryduff and Kyle Orr (18) from Dromore. Greer is the brother of last
year’s winner Jonathan and is tackling the whole of the UK series and attempting to
keep the title in the family. Orr also returns for the whole series and looks to complete
all events after an unfortunate accident in Ireland in 2007 meant that the UK series
could not be completed past round two.

2008 also sees a group of new drivers joining the series including Steven Brown and
Kris Hall. Both these drivers have stepped into the series as members of the MSA
British Rally Academy and will use the FST UK to enhance their training and
development alongside the MSA British Rally Scheme.

Prior to the first round registered contenders will be able to take part in a pre)season
test/training event organised for the FST crews. Drivers will get a chance to test their
cars at the MSport Greystoke test facility on Thursday before the event and then on
Friday undertake a series of physical tuition, sports psychology with Hugh Richards from
the Edinburgh University Sports Science Department and codriver training from Glenn
Patterson – a tutor with the MSA British Rally Academy and former J)WRC co)driver.
All registered crews will be competing for a prize fund of £17,550 over the course of the
year, with the winner on each round taking home £750, decreasing to £75 for eighth
position – a total of £2,925 on each round of the series.

At the end of the season the winner will choose between a Ford Fiesta road car or an
MSport funded drive on the FIA World Rally Championship event, Wales Rally GB 2008.
In addition one ‘wildcard’ from the series will also be given the opportunity to follow in
the footsteps of last year’s winner, Adam Gould, by competing head to head with
competitors from all over the world at the FST International Shootout, for an opportunity
to win a year’s contract with the BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team.
Andrew Wheatley, Business Manager, M”Sport said:

“There have been a number of small tweaks to the programme during the off)season
which we hope will have reduced the costs for competitors and increased the overall
competitiveness of the series. The incorporation of the new Greenergy E85 bioethanol
fuel is a positive step for motorsport as a whole and the change to Pirelli tyres has given
us as the series promoters some great opportunities going forward. The enthusiastic
support of Steve Perez through the VK brand is also going to really benefit competitors
going forward into the new season. We are really excited to see that the championship
will once again be fiercely competitive with rallies fought over seconds – exactly the
type of situation that we envisaged when the series started in 2006.”

Audi DTM 2008

AUDI AG targets the successful defence of the DTM championship title with an interesting and strong mix of big names and young talented drivers. Oliver Jarvis (GB/24), Katherine Legge (GB/27) and Markus Winkelhock (D/27) have secured the three remaining cockpits within the Audi factory team for which racing drivers from around the world were in contention.

“We really couldn’t complain about a lack of interest,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. “A lot of big-name drivers also approached us, which shows just how interesting Audi and the DTM are. It was, however, clear from the off that we would stick to our strategy of further rejuvenating our driver squad and, quite logically, to nurture our own talent alongside our established stars.”

Oliver Jarvis, Katherine Legge (both Great Britain) and Markus Winkelhock (Germany) made lasting impressions during a driver evaluation in Spain and, in the process, secured their seats for the 2008 DTM.

With the 27-year-old Markus Winkelhock, Audi signed one of the most promising and well-known young German racing drivers. The Swabian scooped the headlines worldwide last year when he sensationally led the race on his Formula 1 debut at the Nürburgring. He laid the foundations for his future at Audi with solid performances in the DTM as stand-in for the injured Tom Kristensen and later in the Audi customer team Futurecom TME.

The 27-year-old Briton Katherine Legge follows in the footsteps of Michèle Mouton, Tamara Vidali and Vanina Ickx. Over the last two years she created quite a stir in the North American Champ Car Series. Katherine Legge is the most successful woman ever to have competed in the US counterpart to Formula 1. The British girl has also already completed her first Formula 1 tests.

Twenty four-year-old Oliver Jarvis is regarded as one of Great Britain’s brightest future prospects. In November 2007 he won the famous Formula 3 Grand Prix in Macau. Jarvis has also recorded several victories for his homeland’s national team in the A1GP series.

The three newcomers got acquainted with their team mates last week at the Audi winter training, which traditionally serves as a fitness check and team building event.

Defending DTM Champion Mattias Ekström starts the 2008 season with the latest generation Audi A4 DTM sporting the number 1. At the “Race of Champions” in December the Swede, already regarded as one of the world’s best and most popular racing drivers, defeated among others, Michael Schumacher.

With the seven-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, Audi has another superstar under contract. The Dane, who has now fully recovered from the effects of his heavy accident at the beginning of the 2007 season, is just as popular in his homeland Denmark as Michael Schumacher in Germany and is also an international star.

Martin Tomczyk, the best placed German driver in the 2007 DTM, starts again for Audi. With Alexandre Prémat (France), Mike Rockenfeller and Timo Scheider (both Germany), Audi also has three young drivers in its ranks who claimed their first podium finishes in the DTM last year and are regarded as potential winners in the 2008 season.

Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich is convinced about the quality of the squad: “I believe this is the strongest driver line-up since our comeback as a factory team in the DTM. From the talent point of view, I’m sure that we are well represented for the impending tough battle against Mercedes-Benz and, furthermore, we have a driving squad that is very popular and will be well supported by the Audi fans.”

In the 2008 DTM, Mattias Ekström, Tom Kristensen, Timo Scheider and Martin Tomczyk, drive the latest generation Audi A4 DTM cars, which are entered by Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline. Mike Rockenfeller and Markus Winkelhock will compete for Audi Sport Team Rosberg, Oliver Jarvis and Alexandre Prémat for Audi Sport Team Phoenix. Katherine Legge’s A4 DTM will be entered by the Audi customer team Futurecome TME. Also in 2008, the team will nominate a driver for the second cockpit themselves.

The first public test days for the 2008 season will be held between 10 and 12 March at Mugello (Italy) and 31 March and 2 April at the Motorsportarena Oschersleben (Germany).
